A Brief Guide to Ozone Insufflation Therapy

An Informative Resource for The Ozone Insufflation Process

Ozone insufflation utilizes medical ozone (O₃) to promote good health and restore systemic health by delivering ozone via insufflation into any cavity within the body (e.g., rectum, vagina, nose, etc.). This insufflation method of delivering ozone is classified as a type of Ozone Therapy and is very effective due to its scientifically supported Enhancing Effects on the Body’s Natural Healing Process and its Antimicrobial, Anti–Inflammatory, and Oxygen Stimulating Properties. As a result of a growing amount of research into the effectiveness of Ozone therapies as a complementary or integrative method of healing, numerous practitioners offer this type of service, including Naturopathic Physicians, Chiropractic Physicians, Bodyworkers, and Homeopaths.

Nasal Insufflation, Rectal Insufflation, Vaginal Insufflation, and Ear Insufflation are other methods used for administering ozone depending on what system of the body is being treated. Ozone is inserted into the nasal cavity with a catheter using nasal insufflation. The use of ozone to treat respiratory/sinus conditions, including nasal congestion and sinus infections caused by allergies, will show the effectiveness of ozone in reducing these conditions and restoring a healthy nose/sinus. Rectal insufflation has also been shown to be effective at improving digestive and immunological function. Research has shown that rectal ozone insufflation inhibits the growth of atherosclerosis and improves the balance of gut flora.Due to enhanced oxygen usage and improved immune regulation, ozone creates a physiological effect because it reduces oxidation. Ozone has been reported to stimulate the production of naturally occurring antioxidants in the body, assist with clearing toxins from the body, and target pathogenic germs (e.g., viruses, bacteria, fungi) without harming normal body cells, when an appropriately low level of ozone is delivered to patients. Recent studies suggest even more of an impact from ozone on prolonged illness by decreasing pulmonary inflammation in animal models of COPD through regulating essential molecular processes plus acting as a safe method for helping to speed up the healing process of wounds in patients with lower extremity ischemic ulcers.

When performed by qualified healthcare professionals, ozone insufflation is generally safe, well tolerated and the majority of adverse events are transient & mild (e.g., minor discomfort, gaseous, sneezing) and depend upon the route of administration. A rare instance of ozone insufflation is the occurrence of a Herxheimer Reaction (i.e., flu-like symptoms that occur during the removal of pathogenic organisms and reducing hypersensitivity due to ozone therapy). In no event is ozone to be inhaled because high doses of ozone are toxic to the lungs and could lead to serious and potentially fatal health issues.

Currently, data supports ozone insufflation as an effective mode of therapy for certain conditions (e.g., respiratory, digestive, gynecological, wounds); however, studies continue to be required to validate the therapeutic properties of ozone insufflation for multiple medical conditions. Ozone insufflation provides a safe, simple, non-invasive and organic alternative to conventional medical therapies; thus, providing a pathway for general enhancement in health via complementary approaches to chronic inflammation/infection; or for aiding in resolving issues related to the immune system.
