Functions, Selection Principles and Advantages of Ozone System Accessories

A summary of the ozone system accessories and their benefits Ozone accessories are critical supporting components for ozone generation systems to operate properly and efficiently and be used safely and effectively. Ozone generation systems are used extensively in water treatment, air purification, medical sanitation, and industrial sterilization applications. Ozone generators are the primary piece of equipment for ozone generation; however, the performance and longevity of ozone generator systems are determined by the performance and quality of the accessories that are used with the system. Ozone system accessories cover the delivery of ozone gas, treating the reaction to ozone, monitoring the safety of ozone, and controlling the function of ozone systems. Examples of common ozone accessories include ozone resistant tubing and connectors, made from polyethylene, polyurethane or PTFE, that will endure the oxidizing effect of ozone and the UV degrading influence to ensure the airtight and stable transmission of ozone gas. Contact tanks are one of the most important water treatment accessories because they provide adequate time and space for ozone to mix with and oxidize the contaminants in water; this is how water is processed efficiently. Ozone concentration meters, ozone residual destructors and remote control devices make up the safety and control system for ozone generators. Ozone concentration meters provide immediate visual or audible warnings when an excess amount of ozone is detected. Ozone residual destructors eliminate any excess ozone that would have been released into the environment or created a health hazard. In selecting the correct ozone accessory, two basic principles should be followed: (1) use materials that are compatible with ozone; and (2) use standardized sizes and parts for the accessories. Ozone will oxidize and corrode materials that are in direct contact with ozone gas; therefore, all components of an ozone generator system (including the ozone accessories) should be constructed of materials that will resist oxidation and corrosion. Using incompatible, commercially available parts can lead to premature deterioration of parts that are used with the ozone generator system, which can substantially reduce the effectiveness of the sterilization and water purification processes. In addition, all ozone accessories must be compatible with the ozone generator’s power output and size. If the accessories are not appropriately matched, there can be too little reaction taking place or too much residual ozone gas will be present after the reaction has taken place. The regular maintenance and timely replacement of ozone accessories will be essential to maximize the performance of the ozone generator system. Worn tubing, corroded connectors and saturated filter media will diminish the performance of the ozone generator system. By utilizing properly sized and configured accessories for ozone generators and utilizing scheduled maintenance, the operational efficiency of the ozone generator will be improved, the equipment failure rate and down-time will be reduced, the life of ozone equipment will be extended, and the safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of ozone generator operations will be maximized in industrial and commercial use over the long term.
